Asbestos is widely used in the construction industry owing to its sound absorbing capabilities, fire ‘resistance capabilities and affordability. Inhaling asbestos can be really detrimental to your health as it can cause serious breathing problems. We, at Rockridge Industrial Services Inc., are experts in demolition, remediation and abatement services. Even though asbestos is banned in many countries, buildings built before the 1990s are more likely to contain asbestos.

How is asbestos problematic?

When asbestos ages, it releases fibres into the air. If these fibres are breathed in excessively, they can cause lung diseases and even cancer. People working with asbestos for years are most likely to suffer the dire consequences of the fibres.

How do I detect asbestos?

It is challenging to detect asbestos as you need to send samples to the lab for testing. For homeowners, you should hire an asbestos professional to get this done.

Products which usually contain asbestos

Houses and apartments built and refurbished during 1930-1980 might contain asbestos. These products generally contain asbestos:

Insulating boards: They were usually used for fire safety, heat and sound insulation. The buildings refurbished and constructed during the 1960s and 70s have materials such as ceiling tiles, bath panels, partitions, ducts and wall lining which contain asbestos. Buildings that have been constructed after 1982 are less likely to have these materials.

Sprayed coating: In the 1960s, sprayed asbestos coatings were used in structural steel for fire protection. Lift shafts and service ducts made from structural steel may usually contain asbestos.

Asbestos cement: It can be found in roofing, partition boards, roofing tiles and bath panels. They don’t generally release high levels of fibre unless subjected to extreme abrasion. Weathering might cause fibres to release in small amounts.

Domestic appliances: Asbestos was used in the manufacture of electric heaters up to 1988. It was also used in oven gloves, fire blankets and ironing boards.
